Artistic residencies: SONORA

Sonora is born in 2024 from the collaboration of Clàudia and Daz as a performance and sound art project in partnership with Espai Cuixart, as part of the Centenary of Modest Cuixart's birth. In March 2025, it officially opens with the installation of an immersive sound system and the premiere of the first performance, starting a cycle of three performances throughout the year that explore Cuixart's pictorial universe through movement and sound.

The project stems from Cuixart's experimental spirit —who expanded painting into the third dimension by incorporating materials and volume— and continues this expansion into sound performance. Sonora investigates what else painting can become when it engages in dialogue with the body, movement, and sound, from an interdisciplinary and contemporary perspective.

A unique space in Europe

The Cuixart Space becomes a unique performative environment that integrates:

  • Workshop, creation factory and gallery.

  • Convivència amb obra original de Cuixart.

  • Immersive sound system with 12 speakers distributed over 150 m².

This system —inherited from the SoundSpiral project created for the London 2012 Olympics— positions the Cuixart Space as the only space in the Girona region with stable infrastructure to host large-scale sound art, and one of the few hybrid spaces of this kind at a European level.

El model és també conceptualment innovador: la cessió del sistema es realitza mitjançant un “lloguer simbòlic” (un bulb d’all local per any), reforçant la dimensió comunitària i experimental del projecte.

Projection

Sonora aims to democratise access to immersive sound technologies, opening them up not only to specialists but also to creators from different disciplines. It advocates for the intersection of visual arts, sculpture, technology, and performance as a driving force for new artistic narratives.

Més enllà de les actuacions a l’Espai Cuixart, el projecte té vocació d’itinerància i expansió, integrant-se dins el programa del Centenari i obrint la porta a futures col·laboracions amb altres espais culturals.

Artists

Clàudia Parés

Born in Barcelona, Clàudia is an interdisciplinary artist working with dance, performance, sound art, and materials. In Barcelona, she graduated in Restoration and Conservation of Cultural Heritage (UB) and trained as a Professional in modern dance (Company&Company), until 2015 when she moved to Hamburg, Germany, to expand her training and work opportunities as a dancer.

During the following 11 years, Clàudia settles in Hamburg and works as an artist and performer for local and international companies and choreographers. She will also deepen her knowledge in performance and dance with a Professional Qualification in Contemporary Dance (CDSH, Hamburg), a Qualification as a teacher of the Feldenkrais method (Feldenkrais Institute Milano-Levico, Italy), both completed in 2018, and with a Master's in Performance Practices (ArtEZ University of Arts, Arnhem, Netherlands) in 2024.

Furthermore, she will carry out her own artistic initiatives such as the co-founding of Kollektiva, a dance collective based in Hamburg (2018-2021), which explores the creation of contemporary dance through non-hierarchical collaboration, performing, participating in festivals, and creating professional workshops.

However, he collaborates with a wide variety of artists on different projects and creates his own pieces, publicly funded.

Similarly, he combines his artistic practice with teaching, regularly conducting workshops on the History of Dance, Feldenkrais, improvisation, and dance at various institutions.

In 2024, together with Daz Disley, they begin the Sonora project in Palafrugell, exploring space and sound through immersive performance. In March 2025, they install the immersive sound system at Espai Cuixart and present their first joint piece, Action Sounding. They are invited to the Mozarteum University in Salzburg in June to present another joint piece, Together We Sing.

In recent years, her artistic and teaching practice includes perspectives of sound composition, integrating the use of voice and sound as a questioning and expansion of the field of dance, while maintaining feminist and decolonial perspectives.

After years living abroad, Clàudia returns to Catalonia to settle in Palafrugell, promote performance, and participate in the cultural fabric of the Girona region and Catalonia.

Daz Disley

Daz creates and helps people to create. His practice and work are mainly based on the creation of devices and systems for making art, as well as teaching – from school children to postgraduates and adults with disabilities.

Their software is used by thousands of users in the fields of audio, image, and video production, and has been awarded for both its software development work and its artistic work.

Since the early 2000s, he has been involved in the design of sound systems and installation for museums, galleries, festivals, and NGOs, as well as the creation of public installations, performances, and curations at local, national, and international levels, including technical direction for a project for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Its systems have hosted hundreds of artists and tens of thousands of spectators, and it is currently working on the integration of immersive sound with live performance.

Quote for MusicTech Magazine as an expert contributor, with a deep interest in why and how things work, and when we can ignore conventions, drives his practice as a facilitator, collaborator, creator, and educator in both tangible and digital realms.

Their most recent research focuses on the design of virtual computers, as part of the operation and creation of software used in the production of immersive sound installation and performance, informing their artistic work and facilitation at x-church (Gainsborough, UK), 4bid gallery (Amsterdam, Netherlands), and Espai Cuixart (Palafrugell).

His video works have been screened at hundreds of local and international festivals, and he is a regular collaborator in performance, both as a producer, facilitator, technician, and performer using sound, voice, and body.

I discovered Palafrugell accidentally due to personal circumstances, and delving into the sociocultural situation of the locality reveals it to be an ideal place for the continuation and development of my creative work, facilitation, and guidance, contributing to the growth and cohesion of the community through artistic intervention.

ITINERÀNCIA

Action Sounding

Action Sounding is an immersive sound art performance that reimagines the mediums of action painting through sound, movement, and materiality, drawing inspiration from the works of Modest Cuixart from 1956 to 1964.

During these years, Cuixart explores by amalgamating unusual materials, often using wood as a support material, investigating the expressive capabilities of matter through the body in action, expanding the perspectives initiated by abstract expressionism into new inquiries. He achieves unusual textures through incisions, burning, and gluing various materials and objects to the support. Examples include Gran Barroco (1959), where the use of metallic iridescence (gold, silver, copper) with pronounced textures can be observed, and his particular use of dripping as seen in Sarga (1961), among many others.

Let us consider Cuixart's material explorations, focusing mainly on collage, layering, engraving, cremation, and dripping as gestures and strategies for creating movement and sound. Thus, we imagine the body as a brush and paint, a dynamic tool interacting with space, the canvas, and materials, such as sand. Each movement generates strokes that accumulate, becoming the visual composition of the scene.

However, we expand the sound quality of these bodily explorations through sound manipulations and with the voice, making the soundscape created through action.

We understand sound as a malleable substance, which we manipulate live during the performance, reflecting the textures and rhythms of Cuixart's works. By using the sound system, we choreograph the trajectory of sound, allowing the audience to experience movement audibly.

We have drawn inspiration from the manipulation techniques that Cuixart used on the support and materials as sound sources: combustion, incision, scratching, as well as dripping – pouring or splattering paint onto the canvas.

Thus, the audience is immersed in a multisensory experience of the work, offering new perspectives on the expressive potential of action painting and its ability to transcend formal limits. Blurring the boundaries between painting, sculpture, sound, and movement, the audience experiences the vibrant qualities of creation and reflects on the interconnection of disciplines and the transformative power of matter.

Discovering the figure

In Discovering the Figure, we revisit the work from the period between the mid to late sixties and the eighties, where the painter focuses on the theme of the figure, maintaining an expressionist distortion of reality while incorporating a new hedonistic and baroque aspect.

We highlight the chromatic stridency that seems to contrast with the sinister and dark background of the bodies and faces.

With a feminist perspective, we review these works featuring women, such as Bruixa de Barbastro (1976), Joc de Dames (1979), (insert), (insert). In the performance, we position the female body as an actor and agent, orchestrating the composition and subverting the power dynamics between painter and muse. We overturn the use of distortion, allowing the body to express its own distortions instead of external impositions, interrupting the traditional relationship between painter and muse. The dismemberment that sometimes risks objectification is claimed by the empowerment of the muse rather than the domination of the artist.

Seeing these works, it is hard not to wonder what Cuixart thought of these women.

Let's exchange the question, speculating and bringing the figure into action, we ask what must they have thought?

Maintaining the satirical and sinister components so characteristic of Cuixart, we invite the audience to partake in a meal, a feast, where the most baroque and self-indulgent gaze and enjoyment are highlighted to question who is watching and who is being watched, the power dynamics of the spectacle of art.

In the context of the Flors i violes festival, we consider the concept of women as flowers, often interpreted as fragile, romanticised, and idealised objects, subverting this by incorporating notions of strength and resilience: where there are flowers, there is life; where there is femininity, there is strength; where the male gaze has been present, these concepts have been ignored. This performance offers new perspectives to nourish and reactivate the body of the muse and the gaze of Cuixart.

INTERNATIONAL RESIDENCIES

Starting from September 2025, we began our programme of artistic residencies by inviting national and international artists. The programme offers a week of residency, with the possibility of using the performance space and receiving guidance on the use of immersive systems, and concludes with a public performance.

In 2025, we invited Feli Navarro and Zoe Antypa to work with the idea of matter, texture, geometry, and apparent form in Cuixart's works from the informalist period, previously explored with Action Sounding.

884

884 is a performance that explores the possible connections between object, movement, text, sound, and other materials, giving rise to resonances and other accidents where the boundaries between the human and the objectual become blurred.

Reflecting on Cuixart's explorations and innovations, Feli's work stimulates and contributes to the revelation and questioning of assumptions regarding form, format, and gender.

Feli Navarro is a multidisciplinary artist who works with performance, sound, and listening practices. Their work seeks resonances and connections between theory and practice, exploring small actions that stir the way we relate to our surroundings.

Broad Vista

The multimedia performance Broad Vista explores the transformation at the boundaries of the natural and the artificial, the familiar and the unusual, the human and the monstrous, and resonates with the dark interpretation of the figure and the transfiguration of painting into sculpture through the breaking of Cuixart's dimensionality.

In this performance, sound and objects of exclusion are reconfigured as extensions of the body, reflecting the remodelling of materiality that traverses the informalist and delirious periods of Cuixart's work, opening space for connections and turning limits into places of encounter, imagination, and new horizons.

Through hybrid practices of performance, world creation, and visual media, zoe explores the multiplicity and fragility of the human body. Her work embraces the interconnections with other beings, both organic and synthetic, to question dominant narratives about individuality and to imagine alternative ways of existing and relating to one another.

Through sensation and speculative thinking, Zoe investigates how boundaries can be dissolved, fostering new perspectives on connection, coexistence, and transformation.

RESIDÈNCIES
LOCALS

With the local residences, we want to host artists from the Girona area to work in the workshop with the sound system for the creation of a piece using immersive technology.

TALLERS INSTITUCIONALS

Taking into account the uniqueness of the performance space we offer, equipped with a sound system that is unique in the region, we want to provide training, intensive courses, and workshops aimed at public institutions, such as collaborating with the University of Girona (UdG). The UdG has a degree in Performing Arts where subjects like Audiovisual Technologies, Audiovisual Creation, and Practices could be taught on-site, offering students the opportunity to access a creative space during their studies.

However, there are professional performing arts companies in the Girona area that can take advantage of the facilities for development, research, as well as for showcasing and performing.

Furthermore, the space and its facilities can host corporate workshops and events, expanding revenue sources beyond the artistic field.

Our goal during 2026 is to develop our network of contacts to initiate new collaborations and partnerships.
