Fundació Privada Modest Cuixart
The institution was created by Modest Cuixart himself, with an initial fund mainly constituted by his private collection, with the intention of establishing a lively and open Cuixartian space in Palafrugell, connected with artists and the most contemporary practices.
The Modest Cuixart Foundation opened its doors to the public in 1998 and, since then, has become a reference space where the art of Modest Cuixart coexists with contemporary artistic creation. The Cuixart Foundation is a non-profit cultural institution established in 1998 with the aim of preserving, disseminating, and promoting the work of Modest Cuixart, one of the most significant artists of the Catalan and international avant-garde. The headquarters of the Foundation is located in Palafrugell (Girona), a place closely linked to the life and work of the artist. This foundation not only focuses on the conservation of Cuixart's work but also promotes contemporary artistic creation and carries out important educational and research activities.
In addition to hosting exhibitions of 20th and 21st-century art, the Foundation organizes activities and public and social programming projects in collaboration with other institutions and entities, with the aim of promoting creativity and critical thinking, and bringing artistic practices closer to innovative methodologies.
The Foundation is located in a space designed by Marc Cuixart, an architect and son of Modest Cuixart, and is one of the few examples of artist studios where the artist and the architect establish a dialogue of complicity between the work and the spaces that host it.

The foundation ensures the preservation of its work, its collection includes paintings, sculptures, drawings, graphic materials, and personal documents. Efforts are made to promote its artistic trajectory through research, study, and public exhibition.
Support for contemporary art
While focusing on Cuixart, the foundation also dedicates itself to the promotion of contemporary artistic creation. Thus, it organises temporary exhibitions and cultural activities that connect the art of the past with current trends.
Space for creation and reflection
The Cuixart Space, created within the foundation, serves as a creative laboratory for contemporary artists. It offers artistic residencies, organises events and exhibitions, and fosters creation and dialogue among artists from various parts of the world.
Educational and didactic activities
The foundation organises activities for schools and educational groups, with the aim of passing on Cuixart's legacy to new generations and promoting the value of artistic creation. This includes educational materials, workshops, and talks.
Research and documentation
The Cuixart Foundation has an important archive with documents, audiovisual materials, and information about Cuixart's life and work. These are essential tools for historical and artistic research, complemented by the project to digitise the entire collection.

Transformation of Cuixart's workshop into a museum space
The foundation is also working to transform Modest Cuixart's workshop into a museum space dedicated to the study and artistic creation where visitors can see the permanent exhibition.
This space will become an accessible centre for research and the exhibition of works, maintaining its original structure and historical character, while adapting to current needs to host visits, events, and educational activities.
The permanent exhibition "Techniques and Research in Cuixart's Work: The Pictorial Procedures of the 20th Century" will offer a unique immersion into the creative process of Modest Cuixart, a prominent figure in Catalan abstract art. Through the recreation of his studio, visitors can delve into his artistic universe, discovering his intimate relationship with materials, techniques, and processes.
The exhibition will showcase the painting procedures used by Cuixart throughout his career, with a special focus on his experimental side. As the artist's studio is preserved as he left it, with materials and works in progress, this circumstance will be taken advantage of to create a semi-permanent exhibition that explains the various techniques used by the artist.
The exhibition delves into the creative process and the constant search for new ways of expression, reflecting its experimentation with various media throughout its evolution.
Visitors will be able to discover a wide range of techniques that Cuixart explored, such as watercolour, grattage on wood, pyrography, oil, encaustic, latex, pigments, metal powder, assemblage, acrylic, collage, and crayons, among others. This selection of techniques not only reflects the richness of his artistic production but also the broader context of 20th-century pictorial procedures, with a direct connection to the artistic practice of many other great authors.
The exhibition is complemented by an educational dossier designed specifically for schools and students, as well as an explanatory video that delves into Cuixart's creative processes. Additionally, workshops are planned for schoolchildren and the general public, where participants will be able to experience firsthand the techniques used by the artist, getting closer to his working method and stimulating their own creativity. This educational approach will allow visitors to understand not only the technical processes but also the symbolic weight and creative spontaneity that characterized Cuixart's work.
In this section, the conversion of the artist's studio into an accessible, modernised space suitable for current research and exhibition needs is proposed. Modest Cuixart's studio, as a fundamental part of his creative universe, will be transformed into a space dedicated to artistic study and creation. Thus, researchers, artists, and interested members of the public will be able to have direct contact with the artist's vital and creative environment.
Objectives of the workshop transformation:
- Preserve the original space.
- Improve accessibility and functionality.
- Integrate the workshop as part of the research centre.
- It aims to ensure that the Cuixart workshop maintains its historical structure and character, and to make it accessible for research and the general public. The space will be adapted for visits, research, and the holding of educational activities or events, without altering its original configuration.
Accions concretes requerides:
- Restoration and repair of damage and wear to the original structure of the workshop, including walls, floors, windows, etc.
- Improvement of the lighting to suit exhibitions and research tasks.
- Adaptation for guided tours: Installation of information panels, areas of interest, and furniture that allow for better interaction with the public.
- Adaptation of spaces for researchers and educational activities.
Modest Cuixart Research Centre
One of the central pillars of the foundation is the Research Centre, which works to update and preserve the documentary archive of Cuixart. This project includes the digitisation of documents, artworks, interviews, and other materials that will be accessible to researchers and the general public. The objectives include the creation of a virtual library, photographic cataloguing, and the preservation of historical documents related to the artist.
Virtual library of resources about Cuixart: Create a space where articles, interviews with the artist, and other research materials can be consulted. Make the most significant existing bibliography about the artist (books, catalogues, and online articles) available to researchers. Promote new educational, informative, and scientific publications.
Online photographic catalogue accessible to both researchers and the general public.
Conservation of historical documents: Digitise the documentary collection (letters, texts, and personal archives of the artist) to ensure their preservation and facilitate access.
Digital cataloguing of the collection: Create a digital catalogue that includes all the works in the collection, with quality images, piece history, etc., in collaboration with experts.
Study of the conservation status of the works and a list of those that can be loaned for exhibitions.
Creation of an accessible database: Include a section that allows access to Cuixart's works, as well as essential documents and bibliography.
Search for Cuixart's works in private collections for their location around the world, with a view to starting the artist's reasoned catalogue (we are maintaining contacts with the Juan March Foundation to facilitate this).
Redesign of the website: Update the design and adapt it for mobile devices, with an update of content, integrating information about exhibitions, the artist's work, events, and educational activities, with links to the digital collection and the reasoned catalogue of the collection.
Creation of specific teaching material about Cuixart and “The Artist's Kitchen: Techniques and Research” for children, students, and teachers (physical and online workbook).
Collaboration with other institutions and museums to disseminate materials to a global audience.
